Summer Reading: A Dispatches Update
Four new articles to read, and an update about a great way to access Dispatches.
We have published four new articles in the last two months. However, as we’re mindful of the amount of email everyone receives, unlike previous posts, we have not emailed each article directly to our subscribers.
As a result, in time for the summer break in the northern hemisphere, we wanted to send you an overview of what we’ve published and a suggestion for the best way to access Dispatches.
The four new articles are:
Twenty Pounds of Headlines Stapled to His Chest: Unbranding Robert Capa
Robert Dannin asks if Capa’s iconic D-Day photographs are all they seemed and reviews A.D. Coleman's award-winning investigation of Capa for what it teaches us about contemporary photojournalism.
Postcolonial Perspectives: Jodi Windvogel on Femicide in South Africa
The latest article in Fiona Wachera’s series of new African work reviews Jodi Windvogel’s long-term project on gender-based violence.
Walking with Intent: Juan Travnik’s “Materia”
Arturo Soto writes about new Latin American photographers, and in this article, he explores how a modern photographic flâneur captures the transition from deindustrialization to gentrification in Buenos Aires.
Artificial Intelligence and the Threat to the Real: An Interview With Mutale Nkonde
As part of our hybrid panel at the Rencontres d’Arles festival, Mutale Nkonde, CEO of AI for the People, speaks about algorithmic racism in the databases that drive large language models and how this bias shapes AI-generated images.
Substack app
A great way to access Dispatches is via the free Substack app.
In the app settings, you can decide whether to receive notifications of new articles via push to the app, email, or both. You can see how to access those options on Android devices here and on iOS devices here.
After our summer break, we will return to letting you know about individual articles via email, so if you would like to receive publication updates without email, the Substack app is a great option.
